Another loss in Vista Land
So this week there's only been one post from me. As I said on Monday, I've started to work on my regular job again after 4 weeks of vacation. I thought that I would be able to have a nice slow start the first week. But guess what, I could forget that!
So together with a few things to do at work, combined with a little lack of ideas of what to post about (hopefully temporary), this has been a quiet week on my blog.
I have a few ideas on what to post on, but they're all development stuff, so I need to get a development environment up and running to test my ideas first.
Yesterday, I decided to try Vista a second time. Last time I ran Beta 2. I posted about it a few months ago. I managed to loose a few files when changing between language versions of Vista Beta 2. This time I made a clean install of Vista RC 1 English, which seems to have gone ok.
Before I installed Vista I made a Ghost Backup of my Windows XP installation. After Vista was installed, I wanted to move the Ghost file to another Hard Drive. After about 70% of the copy operation was finished, I got a dialog that said I needed Admin permissions to continue moving the file. I accepted. The dialog came up after a while again, with the options Retry, Skip and Cancel. I tried Retry a couple of times, and the went to Skip. And guess what happened? The ghost file was gone. It was neither at the source or destination!!!! It's the second time I've lost important files in Vista.
Fortunately this time, I had made another copy of all files in my profile. First time I lost files it was due to the Easy File Transfer tool, and using it between different language versions. Later, after much work I managed to restore those files with a virtual machine. But this time I am afraid the ghost file is gone forever.
Well, I will try to get my ideas going again, along with my dev environment.
